1. Bio
Hey! Andrew here :) My wife is actually the only person who calls me Andrew, everyone else calls me Hutch. I picked up that nickname in grade school and it’s stuck ever since.
I joined Medium hoping to make tons of money and retire by age 36….I mean to share my life stories and experiences. I initially started out writing about things like relationships, finances, and mental health. Now, most of my posts are drawings and focus on topics like parenting, fatherhood, and life as a millennial.
Some of my work is published in Slackjaw, Frazzled, P.S. I Love You, and The Haven. I also have my own publication, Coffee and Sunrises. Shoutout to some of the editors I’ve worked or who have published my pieces: Andrew Knott, Molly Henderson, Sarah James, Dan Moore, Lindsay Hameroff, Christine Stevens, and Page Barnes.
The inspiration for my humor pieces comes from my unique background. I’m the 2nd oldest of 8 kids. I grew up in a very religious, ultra-conservative home with a Tiger mom. My grandmother and mother both immigrated to the US from other countries — Venezuela and Korea. And I served in the Army and now work in tech. I pull from all of these life experiences when crafting my pieces.
Most people hear my very white name and are often surprised when they meet me in person for the first time. According to 23andMe, I’m not only Venezuelan and Korean, but English, Irish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, and Mongolian…to name just a few of the 20+ ethnicities in my profile.
I was 16 years old when the 9/11 terrorist attacks happened, and I signed up for West Point weeks later as a way to serve and give back. My 8 years in the Army after graduating from West Point included tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, earning a Bronze Star, and making the rank of Captain.
After I got out of the Army, I helped start a non-profit called Team RWB — an organization that helps connect veterans to their community.
For the last 5 yeas, I’ve worked at Airbnb and I do a little bit of everything — operations, strategy, finance, human resources, and partnerships. I also lead the Airbnb Veteran’s ERG. In my free time, I do a few phone calls a week with veterans who are looking to get into the tech space.
I’m married to the most amazing woman and we have a daughter who is the joy of my life :)
2. Now
I recently started a bi-monthly humor column for Slackjaw. The column is called, “The Enlightened Millennial Father,” and follows my adventures as a new dad. Shoutout to Alex Baia who always provides great feedback on my posts before they go live.
As a new dad, I don’t have a lot of free time. For my posts, I usually draw out everything in my head, and then when I’m on shift watching the baby, I’ll draw things out between the hours of 2am and 4am. Since I’m a new dad, I don’t dare sleep when I’m on shift — I usually check on my daughter every 5 seconds like any anxious new dad.
3. Things I Enjoy
I enjoy a lot of different things. I’m an avid runner and cyclist, and also love playing the guitar and piano. Three to four times a week, I like to throw on my apron, put on some Sam Cooke or Leon Bridges, and cook dinner for my family.
