Creating A Tik Tok Banger Is My New Goal For 2020
In therapy yesterday, I opened up about my relationship with my older brother. I’ve been working on my relationship with him for the past few years, but like so many relationships, progress is slow and hard.
After explaining to my therapist my goal in 2020 is to have more empathy, be a better listener, and love my brother more, she paused and said, “That’s great, but I think you’re focusing on the wrong things.” “What you really need to do is learn how to use Tik Tok and create a banger.”
The word banger was foreign to me, so I looked it up. It’s a video that goes viral on Tik Tok and gets over a million views. My therapist patiently explained to me that true happiness and joy won’t come from working on relationships and putting people first.
Happiness and joy will come from becoming viral online and building a digital presence — one that will make me famous along the way.
She lovingly explained to me my virtual followers are the ones that will pick up the phone late at night when my depression gets bad.
They’ll be the ones that show up on a Wednesday when I’m feeling especially sad and lonely.
And they are the ones that will be there for me in old age when no one else is.
What an eye opener this is! This whole time, I’ve been getting it all wrong. Maybe I’m just an out of touch elder Millennial. Seems like I need to take a page from Gen Z and focus more on building my following on Tik Tok, Snapchat, and Instagram. Actually, Instagram is probably outdated — I’ll just focus on Tik Tok and Snapchat.
I created my profile on Tik Tok this morning and uploaded my first video. It’s already gotten 60 views! Whoo! My therapist said to be patient — it can take time to build a loyal following full of real love and empathy and support.
This stuff doesn’t just happen overnight, you know. But I know if I work hard, if I commit to it and persevere, I can accomplish my goal.
I’ll work on it every day and continue to go to therapy for emotional support and encouragement. You can’t expect to become viral without the love and support of a trained therapist.
It seems all the research about relationships and happiness are wrong. It’s sad to think I’ve been wasting my time all along. Instead of working on my relationship with my brother, and my dad, and my friends, I could have been working on my online presence and becoming Tik Tok famous.
Time to stop writing, I’ve got some videos to make!
