What It’s Like Growing Up In A Big Family

  1. You know how to eat fast. The first two kids who were done with dinner got second helpings. Everyone else had to settle for cereal.
  2. Buying everything — including shoes — from the thrift store
  3. Wearing hand-me-downs of hand-me-downs 10 years out of style
  4. Road trips in the family van where there were never enough seatbelts for humans
  5. All the kids sharing 1 bathroom — yeah, that makes perfect sense
  6. Mom and dad combining 2 or 3 or 4 names all into one when they called for you
  7. Having enough people to always form your own soccer or basketball or football or baseball team
  8. Always having someone to go on adventures with — and always having someone to watch your back
  9. Being asked all the time if you’re Mormon
  10. Being told your parents must have had a lot of sex, well before you even knew what that meant
  11. Babysitting 3 or 4 younger siblings at the same time by age 9
  12. Being late to everything because getting everyone out the door without something going wrong at the last minute was impossible
  13. Learning very early you can’t be the best at everything. One of your siblings is always better at something than you. Or multiple things.
  14. Being asked by everyone if you will be just like so and so older sibling and having to smile and nod through it
  15. Lifelong friends that you wouldn’t trade for anything in the world
